What You Will Like

The Acura RDX was redesigned for 2013, becoming slightly larger and adopting a V6 to replace the former turbocharged 4-cylinder. As a result, this RDX is quieter, more refined and more comfortable, and rather than being one of the edgier compact crossovers it's now a somewhat smaller but still refined alternative to mid-size luxury models like the Lexus RX or Cadillac SRX. The RDX's simplified model lineup and rich list of standard features also means that buyers will get a well-equipped luxury vehicle that probably has a lower price tag than many other well-equipped models.

Introduction

The Acura RDX combines engineering technology and efficiency with responsive handling, a traditional silky powertrain with 3.5-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic, clear gauges, classy leather, class-leading interior volume, and rear seats that easily flop for cargo. The RDX competes most closely with the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class.

Nothing significant has changed for the 2015 model year. RDX was completely redesigned for the 2013 model year. The 2016 RDX receives refreshed styling and upgrades to the powertrain and structure.

The 2015 Acura RDX comes with a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 273 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission that incorporates manual control. The engine and transmission are both so smooth, they feel flawless. Fuel mileage is an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg City/Highway, for an EPA Combined 23 miles per gallon with front-wheel drive.

All-wheel drive is available. Simpler and lighter than Acura’s SH-AWD setup, which is used in other models, the RDX’s AWD system is designed for greater fuel mileage. In about 400 miles of driving in our RDX AWD, mostly at 72 mph on the freeway but with some hilly city runs, we averaged 21.6 mpg. The EPA rates the 2015 RDX AWD at 19/27 mpg City/Highway (22 mpg Combined).

Handling is taut and precise. The steering employs what Acura calls Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering. Reaching beyond speed-sensitive power steering, it increases or reduces the amount of effort needed to turn the wheel in either direction, based on the same sort of traction measurements that stability-control sensors receive. By instantaneously weighting the steering wheel, the system makes it harder for the driver to over-correct.

The Acura RDX suspension features Amplitude Reactive Dampers, sophisticated shock absorbers designed to offer the best of all worlds. During our test drive, we found the dampers transmitted too many sharp bumps to our spine.

The 2015 Acura RDX interior has sweeping lines and uses rich materials. It’s very quiet in the cabin. Over harsh freeway surfaces, in particular, you can’t hear any tire buzz, thanks to ample sound-deadening materials. Door openings are large, and the rear seats fold down with one touch.

Leather seating surfaces are standard, along with heated front seats, a power moonroof, 360-watt audio system, and Multi-Angle rearview camera. Keyless Access with pushbutton start also is standard, along with an Active Noise Control system. An optional Technology Package has all the tricks, including a power liftgate, HID (high-intensity-discharge) headlamps, and an SMS text messaging feature. Also in the Technology group is an automatic climate control system, which considers the position of the sun when adjusting the interior temperature.

The Acura RDX is manufactured in Ohio.

Lineup

The 2015 Acura RDX comes in just two models: RDX front-wheel drive ($35,095) and RDX all-wheel drive ($36,495). Either way, RDX is powered by a 3.5-liter V6, driving a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Standard equipment includes leather-trimmed sport seats, satellite radio, driver’s 10-way power seat, heated front seats and sideview mirrors, 7-speaker 360-watt audio system, Bluetooth, remote entry, pushbutton start, power moonroof, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Technology Package ($38,795 with front-drive, $40,195 with AWD) adds navigation with voice recognition, real-time traffic with rerouting, solar-sensing dual-zone climate control, ELS premium Surround Sound system with 410-watt amplifier, power liftgate, projector beam HID headlamps, and foglamps.

Safety equipment on all models includes six airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake distribution and brake assist, and tire pressure monitor. Optional all-wheel drive can improve handling stability in slippery conditions.

Walkaround

For the 2013 redesign, Acura said the RDX went from looking sporty to more formal, elegant and sophisticated. Sure enough, it’s all true. RDX is still a medium-sized Acura SUV in your mind (though technically it’s a compact), like all the others you’ve known; but the sheetmetal is indeed more elegant and sophisticated. The second-generation RDX is also 100 pounds lighter than pre-2013 models.

The hood on the Acura RDX appears long, extending downward to an arc before the grille begins with a touch of black mesh over the wide band of wing-shaped silver, which is Acura’s hallmark emblem. Below the grille, the front fascia is clean, stylish, and aerodynamic. Rounded at the edges, it features sleek, sharp, exotic-eye headlamps and two tidy trapezoidal air intakes at the bottom corners.

Blocky round fender flares remain from the original RDX, but the sides are sculpted cleanly, with rounded rockers instead of cladding. Most notably, the roofline and window outline is indeed elegant, reminiscent of the Lexus RX 350. Tinted door glass is installed. The lines on the 2015 RDX make the old RDX look like its square roof was just slapped on.

At the rear, too, a more formal look is evident. Smooth downward diagonal edges make the back appear less blocky than in the past.

Interior

The interior of the RDX matches the exterior, with sweeping lines. Analog gauges and graphics are clean and beautiful, high contrast in white and LED backlit at night. The front doors open wider than in the original RDX, and the center console offers a sizable 8.2 liters of space (5.6 liters in the glovebox).

We spent a week in the RDX, and found it to be sweetly quiet over all pavement and at all speeds, a result of attention and insulation. We also especially liked the lighting that brightens and dims progressively. Switches are illuminated in the dark, including the switches on all four doors. The RDX features theater dimming, set by the driver to any of three levels.

Acura’s leather seats are invariably clean, classy, and smooth, and the RDX is now all Acura. They fit well, with good ergonomics and bolstering, which is helpful because Acuras corner well and can be driven with spirit. The driver’s seat has two-way adjustable lumbar support. We ran a hard 200 miles in the rain, and the seats got an A for comfort and support.

However, the navigation and radio, part of the Technology Package, don’t come close to an A. The navigation system was consistently inaccurate and hopeless with voice recognition (although, after our passenger repeatedly fooled with it while we were driving, the system did manage to find the nearest Big 5 sporting goods store). In addition, the radio was difficult to tune, taking time and concentration off the road. It made us long for the simplicity, accuracy and clarity of, say, the Volkswagen Tiguan.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel holds audio and cruise controls on its three spokes, as well as a button for the Multi-Information Display, along with navigation, voice recognition and more. Controls for standard Bluetooth are on the lower left corner of the steering wheel.

The MID information window is located on the face of the speedometer, and shows temperature, odometer, average mpg, instantaneous mpg, range, tire pressure, average speed and elapsed time. We use range, or distance to empty, the most; and like many information displays (exceptions include the VW Tiguan), we think it takes too many clicks to find it on the RDX.

Like a growing number of cars, the RDX features a one-touch turn signal system for lane changes. When the driver moves the lever just a touch, the turn signals flash three times.

The rearview camera is viewed on the 5-inch LCD display on the center stack. Solid yellow guidelines indicate the vehicle’s width, but we found them to be unclear and weren’t willing to depend on them if scraping a fender was a possibility.

With the Technology Package comes an 8-inch display with three rearview camera angles: normal 130 degrees, wide-angle 175 degrees, and downward at the rear bumper for close parking or backing up to a trailer. Also included is a 360-watt 7-speaker audio system.

At the rear, the door openings are wide for easy access, and back-seat legroom is an okay 38.3 inches. The 60/40 rear seats drop nicely with one touch. With the seats down there’s 76.9 cubic feet of cargo space, plus best-in-class total interior volume.

If dual-zone climate control isn’t enough, the Technology Package offers a GPS-linked, solar-sensing, automatic climate control system. The nav system determines the position of the sun and, using the solar sensor on the dashboard, the climate control automatically adjusts the heating and cooling inputs, fan speed, and vent position from side to side, to compensate for asymmetrical solar heating and maintain the set cabin temperatures. All we can say is: whew. Kind of like having your own house robot to draw the blinds and open the windows for you when it’s too sunny in the room. We’re fine with the standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

The Technology Package also includes an internet radio interface and an SMS text messaging feature that works with certain phones and plans. It can read incoming texts aloud over the audio system, and allow the driver to reply without touching his or her phone, sending one of six messages: Talk to you later, I’m driving; I’m on my way; I’m running late; OK; Yes; No.

Driving Impressions

We found the Acura RDX smooth, stable and comfortable 99 percent of the time, but when you hit sharp bumps they’re transmitted through that nice bucket seat. It’s a shame the ride delivers jolts, because otherwise it’s all good. We also tested a larger Acura MDX, which was better, but still had traces of the jolt.

The V6 that comes on all RDX models makes 273 horsepower and produces plenty of smooth acceleration. It’s rated at an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg with front-wheel drive, 19/27 mpg with all-wheel-drive. The Acura V6 a 60-degree single-overhead-camshaft design with 24 valves, actuated by iVTEC, or intelligent Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. The engine has an aluminum block and heads, with iron cylinder liners.

The 6-speed automatic transmission is as smooth as the engine. There are two automatic modes, plus Sequential SportShift with well-designed paddles. The first five gears are relatively short, for sharp acceleration; sixth gear is tall, for lower rpm at freeway speeds and thus better highway fuel mileage. The transmission has all the latest technology, including a multi-clutch lock-up torque converter, Grade Logic Control, Shift Hold Control and Cornering G Shift Control. None of those little brains in the transmission intruded, during the time we had the car. Fuel economy is boosted by a tall sixth gear and the Variable Cylinder Management system, which uses 3, 4, or 6 cylinders depending on need. It’s totally invisible; we never once felt it.

The RDX handles really well. The all-wheel drive enhances cornering by moving torque to the rear wheels when needed, although it’s not Acura’s SH-AWD (super handling all-wheel drive), as used in other models.

Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering uses sensors to detect understeer (front tires sliding) or oversteer (rear tires sliding), and the stability control does its thing by applying the brakes to an appropriate wheel. But next, if the driver is turning the steering wheel too much in one direction or the other, the weight of the steering is increased by reducing the electric assist to the power steering, making it harder for the driver to continue his or her imperfect pursuit of control.

Summary

For Acura lovers, the V6 RDX is perfect. It combines Acura’s best engineering technology and efficiency with responsive handling, a traditional silky powertrain with 6-speed automatic, clear gauges, classy leather, class-leading interior volume, and easy seat flop for cargo. Fuel mileage is so-so, the price is relatively high, and sharp bumps are felt.

Sam Moses filed this report to NewCarTestDrive.com after his test drive of the Acura RDX in the Pacific Northwest.

About These Prices

As you know, pricing cars is particularly complicated. One of our duties at CarQuotes.com is to help our customers comprehend this process better.

Three important prices we may show on a particular vehicle

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Price is for research purposes only. It reflects a typical, negotiated price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, license and registration, and where applicable, finance charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. The Estimated Target Price is NOT a price quote from CarQuotes.com or any other dealer. If you request a price quote from a dealer via CarQuotes.com displaying an estimated target price, your price may differ.

Invoice is commonly known as the published amount that the dealer paid the manufacturer for the vehicle. This may or may not represent a close relation to the dealer’s actual cost, but can be beneficial as a benchmark. This figure is available on many other web sites however CarQuotes.com adds an estimate of local and regional fees from manufacturer to the dealers to this price, which makes it very close to the actual invoice amount for cars at your local dealer.

MSRP is the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. This is a proposed price only. For most vehicles, the CarQuotes.com price is below this amount. Some high demand cars may be priced over this amount.

Estimated Target Price

The CarQuotes.com Target Price is to be used as a general guide that reflects a typical, market price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. This price is based on our research and estimates of supply and demand in the marketplace. There are many factors that go into the final price of a particular vehicle including local supply and demand. Your final price may differ.

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Prices include

The ’base’ price of the vehicle
All options that you select
Base Destination Charges — this is a charge that is added to the base price for every vehicle
Any related Estimated Manufacture to Consumer Cash Rebates. Note: rebates are subject to change at any time. Please make sure to confirm any consumer Cash rebates with your dealer representative at the time of purchase.

CarQuotes.com Estimated price(s) do NOT include any of the following:

Local taxes, license fees and other local fees, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, and where applicable, finance charges — these fees are also excluded from Dealer Invoice and MSRP and would be excluded from most advertisements you might see.
Random ’special qualification’ rebates — i.e., for new college grads only; for customers trading in a specific type of car.  Ask your dealer Representative for more information on ’special qualification’ rebates.

CarQuotes Estimated Dealer Price

The Estimated CarQuotes Dealer Price is an estimate of the pricing presented to CarQuotes members from CarQuotes Authorized Dealers in your area, and is calculated by subtracting an estimated savings value from the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") as well as a value that relates to invoice for the "ideal vehicle" you configured. Dealer documentation, administrative or similar processing fees are not included in the price estimate. Any vehicle configured on the CarQuotes website is an "ideal vehicle" and may not exist at a CarQuotes Authorized Dealer or any other partner dealer. Each Dealer attempts to match a member’s vehicle preferences with the best possible selection from current, in-stock inventory.

Estimated Savings

The Estimated Savings represents the estimated amount of savings off of MSRP available to you from CarQuotes Dealers for a vehicle consistent with your configured preferences plus any customer incentives currently available.  This is also true when it comes to CarQuotes estimated target prices. Your actual savings will depend on several factors including market conditions, the style of vehicle you select, installed options, dealer coverage, and applicable manufacturer incentives. Each dealer sets its own pricing.

Advertised Rebates, Special Manufacturer Financing or Leasing Programs

In most cases, you must choose between these programs OR a customer rebate or a special manufacturer-to-dealer incentive that may or may not already be included in your CarQuotes.com Target Price. So, your final price may go up if you take advantage of special manufacturer financing. Credit Union members should contact their Credit Union loan department to determine what type of loan and financing options are right for you.

Please note that CarQuotes.com strives to include identified manufacturer incentives within the CarQuotes.com Target Price. CarQuotes.com does not administer these programs, which are subject to and often change without notice. Eligibility for these programs is subject to verification by a licensed auto dealer.

Ask your dealer representative for complete manufacturer program details for your area, and how participation in these programs will affect your price.

Base Vehicle

The base vehicle is the vehicle before any optional equipment or destination fees have been added. All of the standard features are included in the base vehicle.

Options

This is the total charge for all optional equipment included in the configuration of your virtual vehicle. The Options charge varies depending on whether it is calculated based on the Factory Invoice or MSRP. Options are not included in the base vehicle price and are not considered standard features.

Regional Fees

A Regional Fee is the fee a manufacturer charges a dealer to advertise and promote the vehicle in the dealer’s market. CarQuotes also includes estimated manufacturer preparation charges (manufacturer charges to the dealer to cover any work done on the car prior to delivering it to the dealership) and fuel charges (the charge for the fuel in the tank when the buyer purchases the vehicle) in this total. CarQuotes attempts to include regional ad fees in its Factory Invoice calculations; other sites at times do not.

Destination Fees

These are the amounts that manufacturers charge to deliver a vehicle from the factory to the dealership.

Customer Incentives

Customer incentives are also commonly known as customer cash or bonus incentives. These incentives are offered by manufacturers as a way of enticing buyers into purchasing a vehicle.

Note: Dealer Invoice amount might not be the amount that the dealer paid to the manufacturer

Dealer Invoice price may or may not bear close relation to a dealer’s actual cost for the vehicle. In some cases, a cost for a vehicle may be significantly less than the invoice price originally paid for the vehicle. Any difference between invoice price and the dealer’s final cost may be caused by many factors including factory refunds, rebates, allowances, or incentives which the manufacturer or distributor may provide to the dealer.
