Compare the 2016 Hyundai Sonata

Loading Comparison...

The Hyundai Sonata is spacious and fuel efficient, making it a worthy rival to America’s best-selling family sedans, from the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord to the Ford Fusion and Mazda 6. That’s a tough list of competitors.

Redesigned for 2015, the seventh-generation Sonata adopted more conservative looks and greater refinement. Flamboyant styling of the previous generation is replaced by a more subdued look inside and out.

Changes for the 2016 model year include the use of some aluminum suspension components, which should help both ride and handling. Emergency braking has been added to the forward collision warning system on 2016 Sonata models. A new 7-inch color touchscreen audio system for 2016 includes an Android Auto smartphone interface. The 2016 Sonata Limited gets the Sonata Sport model’s more aggressive front bumper.

Hyundai continues to offer a Sonata Hybrid sedan, with similar updating for 2016, but also has added a new Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, capable of traveling up to 24 miles on battery power alone.

One of the lighter cars in its class, Sonata was among the first to adopt a lineup with nothing but four-cylinder engines. The base 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter four and the turbocharged 245-hp 2.0-liter four are free-revving engines that deliver power fairly quietly, nearly free of vibration. Both mate with a 6-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth, quick shifts and has manual controls. Sport 2.0T models have paddle shifters.

Defined by the EPA as a large car, Sonata is marketed as a midsize. All Sonatas get a three-mode selector that alters shift timing, throttle operation, and power-steering assist through Eco, Normal, and Sport modes. Eco mode really impedes downshifts.

The Sonata Eco trim level features a small-displacement 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, making 177 horsepower, with a noisy exhaust and 32-mpg Combined EPA mileage estimate. Hyundai’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine comes in Sonata SE, Sport, and Limited trim levels, while the turbocharged 2.0T is offered in Sonata Sport and Limited trim.

Infotainment systems come with an 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone-app compatibility, and HD radio. Navigation-equipped cars get Apple Eyes Free Siri integration. All models now have Google’s Android Auto smartphone system.

In crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Sonata has earned five-star scores all around. All categories except the small-overlap test were rated Good by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata offers a choice of three different four-cylinder engines, plus hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.

Sonata SE ($21,750) comes with the 2.4-liter engine, cloth upholstery, 7-inch color touchscreen, satellite and HD radio, CD player, USB port, Android Auto, rearview camera, Bluetooth with audio streaming, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Sonata Sport ($23,400) gets a 10-way power driver’s seat and sporty interior and exterior trim. A Technology package adds navigation, sunroof, premium audio, and SiriusXM Travel Link.

Sonata Eco ($23,725) gets the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and dual-clutch transmission. Sonata Limited ($27,350) upgrades with leather seating surfaces, woodgrain interior trim, heated front/rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, pushbutton start, sunroof, LED taillights, hands-free trunk opener, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert. Technology and Ultimate packages are available.

Sonata Sport 2.0T ($28,925) features the 2.0-liter turbo, paddle shifters, sport-tuned suspension, dual-pinion steering, flat-bottom steering wheel, bigger front brakes, hands-free trunk opener, and 18-inch wheels. Sport 2.0T Limited ($34,075) adds lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, a panoramic sunroof, power passenger seat, rear side sunshades, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and navigation.

Sonata Hybrid SE ($26,000) comes with proximity-key entry/pushbutton start, dual-zone automatic climate control, 5-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, hands-free trunk, LED taillamps, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Hybrid Limited ($30,100) steps up to HID xenon headlights, 17-inch wheels, leather, power heated/ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and heated steering wheel.

Sonata Plug-in Hybrid includes navigation, 17-inch wheels, blind-spot detection, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and Dimension audio. Sonata Plug-In Hybrid Limited gets most items in the Hybrid Ultimate package, except the panoramic sunroof.

All have seven airbags, including a driver’s knee bag.

With its more conservative exterior, the Sonata looks more sophisticated while lacking some of the prior generation’s exuberance. Some, however, say Sonata has become too bland.

Subdued horizontal body lines reach back to the chrome-surrounded rear spoiler. Sport models stand out visually, with a distinctive front end and rocker-panel extensions. Sport 2.0T gets quad exhaust tips, and fancy 18-inch alloy wheels.

Hybrids differ from regular Sonatas in several ways. Each change tends to be subtle, and was made largely to improve aerodynamics. Headlights have a different shape, as do the rocker panels. The Hybrid’s front end gets differently contoured fascias and horizontal grille bars. Eco-spoke alloy wheels are mounted, and an aero-style back bumper is installed.

Inside, the Sonata adopts a formal, attractive look, trimmed in satisfying grades of plastic and leather. Controls are grouped in specific zones, and the center stack is loaded with buttons and knobs. Trim pieces that resemble carbon fiber and aluminum fit in nicely. We can do without the available woodgrain trim.

Sonata is one of the roomiest midsize sedans, making better use of its interior dimensions than, say, a Honda Accord. Front seats offer plenty of space for six-footers. Seats are comfortable, too, helped by abundant bottom cushioning and bolstering, especially in the Sport 2.0T. Rear-seat occupants get ample knee room, though leg space isn’t quite as sizable. Rear headroom is fine for riders under six feet, if a little snug with a sunroof installed.

Storage bins abound, and the generous trunk holds 16.3 cubic feet of luggage, with handy seat-fold levers inside. Even at highway speeds, the relaxed cabin is quiet enough to permit front-seat conversations without straining to hear. Hyundai’s navigation system includes a split-screen view and the ability to record up to 22 minutes of satellite radio.

Driving Impressions

Light weight and a stiff structure help give gas-engine Sonatas a controlled, settled ride, neatly damped when rolling over bumps. Cross a train track at highway speed, and the Sonata’s suspension complies to the assault with little drama.

Slightly revised tuning makes the Sport 2.0T’s ride a little firmer, and handling more crisp. Steering feel also is better in the 2.0T. All Sonatas have electric power steering, which lets the sedan track with little wandering or excessively weighty feel.

Hyundai’s 2.4-liter engine lets the Sonata wind out eagerly and smoothly, though it’s not especially swift. Undeniably stronger than the base engine, the 2.0T four-cylinder is smooth for a turbo four, and nearly vibration-free.

Performance is surprisingly spirited with the Eco, which can strain a bit but still feels eager. You barely notice shifts from the dual-clutch transmission, except at very low speed, but steering feel is significantly lighter than in a Sonata Limited.

Hybrid drivability and smoothness have improved considerably. The Plug-In Hybrid delivers especially good performance, and a useful charge-restoring mode, though it cannot be locked into EV mode.

Using a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission, Hyundai’s Hybrids, despite extra weight, now accelerate and respond more like gas-powered sedans. The gasoline engine has shrunk to 2 liters in this second Hybrid generation, and capacity of the lithium-ion polymer battery has increased. Total system output is 193 horsepower. In electric mode, the transmission shifts up and down in the usual way, and if climate control is on, it’s not so easy to tell when the gas engine is starting or stopping.

Hybrids are close to silent. Ride quality leans toward the soft side; but well-damped and free of bounciness. You can check state of charge via a smartphone app. Plug-in Hybrids also have a dash-top charging light. Charge time is under three hours at 240 volts (Level 2), or nine hours at 110 volts.

The electric steering on the Sonata Hybrid is light and has no feel, like steering a wheel on a video game.

The Sonata Hybrid SE is EPA-rated at 40/44 mpg City/Highway, 39/43 mpg for the Limited. Most 2.4-liter gas-engine models are EPA-rated at 25/38 mpg, while the turbocharged Sport 2.0T is rated at 23/32 mpg. The Sonata Eco is EPA-rated at 28/38 mpg.

The Hyundai Sonata presents a broad range of midsize sedans with varying performance/economy preferences. The Sonata Hybrid offers outstanding fuel economy.

About These Prices

As you know, pricing cars is particularly complicated. One of our duties at CarQuotes.com is to help our customers comprehend this process better.

Three important prices we may show on a particular vehicle

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Price is for research purposes only. It reflects a typical, negotiated price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, license and registration, and where applicable, finance charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. The Estimated Target Price is NOT a price quote from CarQuotes.com or any other dealer. If you request a price quote from a dealer via CarQuotes.com displaying an estimated target price, your price may differ.

Invoice is commonly known as the published amount that the dealer paid the manufacturer for the vehicle. This may or may not represent a close relation to the dealer’s actual cost, but can be beneficial as a benchmark. This figure is available on many other web sites however CarQuotes.com adds an estimate of local and regional fees from manufacturer to the dealers to this price, which makes it very close to the actual invoice amount for cars at your local dealer.

MSRP is the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. This is a proposed price only. For most vehicles, the CarQuotes.com price is below this amount. Some high demand cars may be priced over this amount.

Estimated Target Price

The CarQuotes.com Target Price is to be used as a general guide that reflects a typical, market price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. This price is based on our research and estimates of supply and demand in the marketplace. There are many factors that go into the final price of a particular vehicle including local supply and demand. Your final price may differ.

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Prices include

The ’base’ price of the vehicle
All options that you select
Base Destination Charges — this is a charge that is added to the base price for every vehicle
Any related Estimated Manufacture to Consumer Cash Rebates. Note: rebates are subject to change at any time. Please make sure to confirm any consumer Cash rebates with your dealer representative at the time of purchase.

CarQuotes.com Estimated price(s) do NOT include any of the following:

Local taxes, license fees and other local fees, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, and where applicable, finance charges — these fees are also excluded from Dealer Invoice and MSRP and would be excluded from most advertisements you might see.
Random ’special qualification’ rebates — i.e., for new college grads only; for customers trading in a specific type of car.  Ask your dealer Representative for more information on ’special qualification’ rebates.

CarQuotes Estimated Dealer Price

The Estimated CarQuotes Dealer Price is an estimate of the pricing presented to CarQuotes members from CarQuotes Authorized Dealers in your area, and is calculated by subtracting an estimated savings value from the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") as well as a value that relates to invoice for the "ideal vehicle" you configured. Dealer documentation, administrative or similar processing fees are not included in the price estimate. Any vehicle configured on the CarQuotes website is an "ideal vehicle" and may not exist at a CarQuotes Authorized Dealer or any other partner dealer. Each Dealer attempts to match a member’s vehicle preferences with the best possible selection from current, in-stock inventory.

Estimated Savings

The Estimated Savings represents the estimated amount of savings off of MSRP available to you from CarQuotes Dealers for a vehicle consistent with your configured preferences plus any customer incentives currently available.  This is also true when it comes to CarQuotes estimated target prices. Your actual savings will depend on several factors including market conditions, the style of vehicle you select, installed options, dealer coverage, and applicable manufacturer incentives. Each dealer sets its own pricing.

Advertised Rebates, Special Manufacturer Financing or Leasing Programs

In most cases, you must choose between these programs OR a customer rebate or a special manufacturer-to-dealer incentive that may or may not already be included in your CarQuotes.com Target Price. So, your final price may go up if you take advantage of special manufacturer financing. Credit Union members should contact their Credit Union loan department to determine what type of loan and financing options are right for you.

Please note that CarQuotes.com strives to include identified manufacturer incentives within the CarQuotes.com Target Price. CarQuotes.com does not administer these programs, which are subject to and often change without notice. Eligibility for these programs is subject to verification by a licensed auto dealer.

Ask your dealer representative for complete manufacturer program details for your area, and how participation in these programs will affect your price.

Base Vehicle

The base vehicle is the vehicle before any optional equipment or destination fees have been added. All of the standard features are included in the base vehicle.

This is the total charge for all optional equipment included in the configuration of your virtual vehicle. The Options charge varies depending on whether it is calculated based on the Factory Invoice or MSRP. Options are not included in the base vehicle price and are not considered standard features.

Regional Fees

A Regional Fee is the fee a manufacturer charges a dealer to advertise and promote the vehicle in the dealer’s market. CarQuotes also includes estimated manufacturer preparation charges (manufacturer charges to the dealer to cover any work done on the car prior to delivering it to the dealership) and fuel charges (the charge for the fuel in the tank when the buyer purchases the vehicle) in this total. CarQuotes attempts to include regional ad fees in its Factory Invoice calculations; other sites at times do not.

Destination Fees

These are the amounts that manufacturers charge to deliver a vehicle from the factory to the dealership.

Customer Incentives

Customer incentives are also commonly known as customer cash or bonus incentives. These incentives are offered by manufacturers as a way of enticing buyers into purchasing a vehicle.

Note: Dealer Invoice amount might not be the amount that the dealer paid to the manufacturer

Dealer Invoice price may or may not bear close relation to a dealer’s actual cost for the vehicle. In some cases, a cost for a vehicle may be significantly less than the invoice price originally paid for the vehicle. Any difference between invoice price and the dealer’s final cost may be caused by many factors including factory refunds, rebates, allowances, or incentives which the manufacturer or distributor may provide to the dealer.
