What You Will Like

The K900 competes with other full-sized luxury cars from manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Infiniti and Audi. With plenty of space, an available V8 engine and rear wheel drive, the K900 follows the same luxury car formula used for decades. However, the K900 brings several of Kia's classic traits to bear on the segment, such as a 100,000-mile warranty, top-notch reliability and clean, fresh styling. With a starting price of just under $50,000, Kia is serious about getting into the luxury car game.

What's New For 2018

The Kia K900 carries over into 2018 essentially unchanged, offering a ton of luxury for its price.

Warranty

  • Basic Warranty: 5 Years / 60,000 Miles
  • Drivetrain Warranty: 10 Years / 100,000 Miles
  • Roadside Assistance: 5 Years / 60,000 Miles

A vehicle's warranty can significant impact your maintenance costs after you drive off the dealer's lot, and it's important to understand the different parts. Typically, a new car warranty includes a Basic warranty, which covers everything except the wear items such as brakes and tires; and a Drivetrain warranty, that covers all the parts that make the car move, such as the engine and transmission

Introduction

Introduced as a 2015 model, Kia’s large rear-drive sedan has changed little since its debut. That steadiness continues into the 2018 model year, with little change evident.

Two powertrains are available. Offered in base Premium and upgraded Luxury trim levels, the 3.8-liter V6 develops 311 horsepower and 283 pound-feet of torque. The 5.0-liter V8 comes only in Luxury trim, generating 420 horsepower and 376 pound-feet. Both engines mate with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is unavailable.

All K900 sedans are well-equipped with leather upholstery and power-adjustable heated/cooled front seats, and a navigation system. Kia’s infotainment system, with a 9.2-inch screen, does a fine job. Compared against similarly priced full-size, rear-drive sedans, differences between Kia’s version and other makes are substantial.

Unlike some luxury-level competitors, including such European automakers as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the K900 lacks much potential for personalization. Only a simple selection of extra-cost options and packages can be added.

Sedate K900 styling isn’t jarring by any means, but it’s not exactly stimulating, either. Body design is more restrained and less expressive than Kia’s other rear-wheel-drive sedan, the recently launched Stinger.

Simulated portholes near front fenders are reminiscent of those used long ago on Buick models. Taken as a whole, the various chrome elements add little to the sedan’s appeal.

Fuel economy falls short of class leaders, but K900 riders can expect a library-quiet ride. Five adults can sit comfortably, though the fifth occupant might feel a bit squeezed.

Eight airbags include protection for back-seat passengers. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera are standard.

Several forms of active-safety technology are available, but only for top models, as an option Luxury-trim models may be fitted with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display. All are included in a costly VIP Plus Package.

In addition to those safety features, the VIP Plus group for V8 Luxury trim level includes a 16-way power driver’s seat, reclining and cooled rear seats, and adjustable headrests. Active lane control, which can steer a wandering sedan back into its lane, isn’t available at all.

Largely because of low sales totals, the K900 has not been crash-tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Lineup

V6 Premium ($49,900) comes with the 3.8-iter V6 engine, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, leather seat upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a 14-speaker audio system, and a 9.2-inch infotainment screen. Buyers can select from only three body colors: white, black, or silver. No individual options are available for V6 models. (Prices are MSRP and do not include destination charge.)

V6 Luxury ($54,900) adds softer leather upholstery, additional speakers, a heated steering wheel, and wood trim.

V8 Luxury ($61,900) upgrades to the 5.0-liter V8 engine and includes 19-inch chrome/alloy wheels, LED headlights, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, and surround-view camera system.

Walkaround

Headlights and the grille are unique to the K900, but few other details differentiate it visually from other Kia models. Similar to the automaker’s Optima and Cadenza sedans, the K900 isn’t likely to draw too many admiring glances.

Trendy nowadays but controversial, the K900 leads off with an oversize grille, which reminds many viewers of a gaping mouth. A smooth beltline runs along the bodysides, just below the windows. A smaller trim strip falls below the front door handles but fades away toward the rear, resulting in a somewhat slab-sided back end.

Interior

Entry into the bright K900 cabin is easy. So is exiting. The panoramic sunroof provides substantial sunlight, without taking up too much head space.

Standard leather seat upholstery in each K900 model might enhance its appeal, but abundant black plastic trim detracts from its overall ambiance. Some trim elements are flat black rather than piano black, conveying a sense of cheapness. Otherwise, materials look quite good, though some surfaces seem out of place in a car that can approach $65,000.

Legroom is adequate for most drivers, though some taller folks might have trouble folding their legs into the front passenger position – even when pushing that seat all the way rearward. Standard front seats adjust 12 ways, though top versions upgrade to 16-way adjustment.

Rear passengers get a large, heated seat. Top models may be fitted with reclining seatbacks as well as a cooling function. Most adults should be content with the K900’s 38.9-inch leg clearance.

Trunk volume totals 15.9 cubic feet, not a remarkable figures for sedans in this class. Kia’s infotainment system, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is a pleasure to operate.

Driving Impressions

Clearly, K900 developers focused mainly on comfort, including luscious, nicely-composed ride quality. Unfortunately, the overall experience tends to be marred by a tentative, indecisive automatic transmission.

Performance trails that of more refined K900 competitors – and of Kia’s own Stinger sedan. Borrowed from other Kia models and the premium Genesis line, the 420-horsepower V8 emits a satisfying rumble, but fails to deliver much sense of hasty urgency.

Whether V6- or V8-powered, the blame for lagging performance in a K900 has been its 8-speed automatic, which never seemed to keep up with driver intentions. We have not yet driven a 2018 model, but no change in powertrain details has been announced by the company.

Handling qualities score better. Steering the big sedan is a pleasant experience, though the sense of being coddled might make a driver feel a little too comfortable. Road feel is limited, though that’s hardly uncommon in premium-level sedans.

Suspension damping, too, is quite good for a large sedan, though it places greater emphasis on comfort than control. Regardless, the K900 can take corners with easy confidence. The big sedan also behaves effectively on cracked and deteriorated pavement surfaces.

Fuel economy isn’t a K900 benefit. In effect, its gas-mileage estimates seem more appropriate for an SUV. The V6 version is EPA-rated at 17/25 mpg City/Highway, or 20 mpg Combined.

V8 Luxury trim manages only 15/22 mpg City/Highway, or 18 mpg Combined. The V8 engine needs premium-grade gasoline.

Summary

Kia hasn’t sold many K900 sedans since 2015. Unobtrusive styling tends to make the sedan fail to attract much notice. Not quite luxurious compared to some rivals, the K900 is more accurately described as a large premium sedan. Performance falls short of stimulating even in V8 form, and fuel economy falters, but a K900 provides comfortable cruising at a relatively affordable price.

About These Prices

As you know, pricing cars is particularly complicated. One of our duties at CarQuotes.com is to help our customers comprehend this process better.

Three important prices we may show on a particular vehicle

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Price is for research purposes only. It reflects a typical, negotiated price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, license and registration, and where applicable, finance charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. The Estimated Target Price is NOT a price quote from CarQuotes.com or any other dealer. If you request a price quote from a dealer via CarQuotes.com displaying an estimated target price, your price may differ.

Invoice is commonly known as the published amount that the dealer paid the manufacturer for the vehicle. This may or may not represent a close relation to the dealer’s actual cost, but can be beneficial as a benchmark. This figure is available on many other web sites however CarQuotes.com adds an estimate of local and regional fees from manufacturer to the dealers to this price, which makes it very close to the actual invoice amount for cars at your local dealer.

MSRP is the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. This is a proposed price only. For most vehicles, the CarQuotes.com price is below this amount. Some high demand cars may be priced over this amount.

Estimated Target Price

The CarQuotes.com Target Price is to be used as a general guide that reflects a typical, market price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. This price is based on our research and estimates of supply and demand in the marketplace. There are many factors that go into the final price of a particular vehicle including local supply and demand. Your final price may differ.

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Prices include

The ’base’ price of the vehicle
All options that you select
Base Destination Charges — this is a charge that is added to the base price for every vehicle
Any related Estimated Manufacture to Consumer Cash Rebates. Note: rebates are subject to change at any time. Please make sure to confirm any consumer Cash rebates with your dealer representative at the time of purchase.

CarQuotes.com Estimated price(s) do NOT include any of the following:

Local taxes, license fees and other local fees, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, and where applicable, finance charges — these fees are also excluded from Dealer Invoice and MSRP and would be excluded from most advertisements you might see.
Random ’special qualification’ rebates — i.e., for new college grads only; for customers trading in a specific type of car.  Ask your dealer Representative for more information on ’special qualification’ rebates.

CarQuotes Estimated Dealer Price

The Estimated CarQuotes Dealer Price is an estimate of the pricing presented to CarQuotes members from CarQuotes Authorized Dealers in your area, and is calculated by subtracting an estimated savings value from the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") as well as a value that relates to invoice for the "ideal vehicle" you configured. Dealer documentation, administrative or similar processing fees are not included in the price estimate. Any vehicle configured on the CarQuotes website is an "ideal vehicle" and may not exist at a CarQuotes Authorized Dealer or any other partner dealer. Each Dealer attempts to match a member’s vehicle preferences with the best possible selection from current, in-stock inventory.

Estimated Savings

The Estimated Savings represents the estimated amount of savings off of MSRP available to you from CarQuotes Dealers for a vehicle consistent with your configured preferences plus any customer incentives currently available.  This is also true when it comes to CarQuotes estimated target prices. Your actual savings will depend on several factors including market conditions, the style of vehicle you select, installed options, dealer coverage, and applicable manufacturer incentives. Each dealer sets its own pricing.

Advertised Rebates, Special Manufacturer Financing or Leasing Programs

In most cases, you must choose between these programs OR a customer rebate or a special manufacturer-to-dealer incentive that may or may not already be included in your CarQuotes.com Target Price. So, your final price may go up if you take advantage of special manufacturer financing. Credit Union members should contact their Credit Union loan department to determine what type of loan and financing options are right for you.

Please note that CarQuotes.com strives to include identified manufacturer incentives within the CarQuotes.com Target Price. CarQuotes.com does not administer these programs, which are subject to and often change without notice. Eligibility for these programs is subject to verification by a licensed auto dealer.

Ask your dealer representative for complete manufacturer program details for your area, and how participation in these programs will affect your price.

Base Vehicle

The base vehicle is the vehicle before any optional equipment or destination fees have been added. All of the standard features are included in the base vehicle.

Options

This is the total charge for all optional equipment included in the configuration of your virtual vehicle. The Options charge varies depending on whether it is calculated based on the Factory Invoice or MSRP. Options are not included in the base vehicle price and are not considered standard features.

Regional Fees

A Regional Fee is the fee a manufacturer charges a dealer to advertise and promote the vehicle in the dealer’s market. CarQuotes also includes estimated manufacturer preparation charges (manufacturer charges to the dealer to cover any work done on the car prior to delivering it to the dealership) and fuel charges (the charge for the fuel in the tank when the buyer purchases the vehicle) in this total. CarQuotes attempts to include regional ad fees in its Factory Invoice calculations; other sites at times do not.

Destination Fees

These are the amounts that manufacturers charge to deliver a vehicle from the factory to the dealership.

Customer Incentives

Customer incentives are also commonly known as customer cash or bonus incentives. These incentives are offered by manufacturers as a way of enticing buyers into purchasing a vehicle.

Note: Dealer Invoice amount might not be the amount that the dealer paid to the manufacturer

Dealer Invoice price may or may not bear close relation to a dealer’s actual cost for the vehicle. In some cases, a cost for a vehicle may be significantly less than the invoice price originally paid for the vehicle. Any difference between invoice price and the dealer’s final cost may be caused by many factors including factory refunds, rebates, allowances, or incentives which the manufacturer or distributor may provide to the dealer.
