What You Will Like

The addition of the new S450 model to the lineup helps bring the starting price of an S-Class to just under $91,000 -- but prices can range to near double that for a well-equipped S65 AMG as the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class lineup certainly isn't cheap. That's always been beside the point, though; the S-Class continues to showcase the leading edge of automotive technology -- including some world firsts for active safety -- and in ride comfort and interior ambiance.

With Mercedes-Benz's PRE-SAFE and Attention Assist technologies, owners get some of the most sophisticated accident-avoidance systems in the world. The 2018 Mercedes S-Class features Level 2 autonomous-driving meaning the car can steer, accelerate and brake; however, human intervention is required for more tactical maneuvers. The S-Class is also the first regular-production car to move entirely to LEDs for lighting -- with the entire car now using more than 400 LEDs, including up to 56 for the headlamps.

What's New For 2018

Mercedes-Benz seems intent on perfecting the S-Class lineup expanding and modernizing it without changing its overall appeal and status. Offered as the flagship sedan in Mercedes-Benz' lineup, the S-Class adds the S450 and S450 4MATIC this year for a more cost-effective option into the platform. The latest offerings are powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive for the 4Matic. The S560 previously equipped with a naturally aspirated 4.7L V8 now gets a twin-turbo 4.0L V8. The S-class also benefits from updated exterior fascias and grille packages, exterior lighting elements, an updated COMAND infotainment system, and more advanced driver-assist safety features bringing Level 2 autonomous-driving capabilities. If that weren't enough Mercedes is introducing a world-first feature called Energizing Comfort Control. The system promotes driver comfort and wellness by networking the vehicle's climate control, music, seat heating, massage programs, ambient lighting and air fragrances to aid the driver's overall wellness.

Warranty

  • Basic Warranty: 4 Years / 50,000 Miles
  • Drivetrain Warranty: 4 Years / 50,000 Miles
  • Roadside Assistance: 4 Years / 50,000 Miles

A vehicle's warranty can significant impact your maintenance costs after you drive off the dealer's lot, and it's important to understand the different parts. Typically, a new car warranty includes a Basic warranty, which covers everything except the wear items such as brakes and tires; and a Drivetrain warranty, that covers all the parts that make the car move, such as the engine and transmission

Introduction

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan has been substantially revised for 2018. The flagship of the marque, the S-Class is the benchmark for all luxury sedans. It’s one of the most lavish and classy displays anywhere of wealth and exclusivity, with graceful and athletic styling, effortless power, an exceptional ride, plush interior, and sweeping standard and optional equipment.

The 2018 S-Class, the fifth year of its generation, raises that mark by some 6500 new parts, including one new V6 and two new V8 engines, along with the returning V12.

For 2018, only the sedans will be updated, among them the S 450, and two Maybach uber-luxury models.

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz S 450 uses a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, while the S 560 takes a new 463-horsepower twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

The AMG S 63 high-performance model makes an awesome 603 horsepower with its new turbo-boosted V8. The V12 in the S 65 is a twin-turbo 6.0-liter makes even more horsepower: 621 hp with 738 pound-feet of torque.

A 9-speed automatic transmission comes in the V6 and V8s, while the V12 takes a 7-speed automatic, and the S 63 uses a wet starter clutch instead of a torque converter. The S 63 also gets a new 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system that can transfer 100 percent of the power from rear to front wheels.

For 2018, the available Magic Ride Control suspension is improved with the ability to lean the car to the inside in corners, by as much as 2.65 degrees. This is designed to reduce centrifugal forces on the passengers and quicken handling. Changes in the cabin include higher resolution infotainment screens, and programs for the climate control system.

Autonomous driving features have been increased for 2018, as well. Intelligent Drive has improved cameras and radar sensors, and uses more GPS data. The system already can steer and brake for the driver, and now it changes lanes after the driver puts the turn signal on. We don’t really like the idea of taking the decision regarding the moment of lane-changing out of the driver’s hands. The system also slows down for tight turns and intersections, freeing the driver from thinking, another thing we don’t see being good.

Standard safety equipment includes front, front side, rear side and curtain airbags; inflatable rear seat belts; adaptive brake lights; and adaptive head restraints. Optional safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with following and steering ability, approaching autonomous driving functions in limited environments, blind-spot monitors, a surround-view camera system, and night vision with obstacle and pedestrian detection.

Lineup

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class ranges from the S 450 ($89,900) with rear-wheel-drive and V6 to the AMG S 65 V12 ($229,500), the Master of the Universe model. In between are the S 560 V8 ($99,900), and the AMG S 63 ($147,500). The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system is available.

Optional equipment includes things like a 24-speaker surround sound system, warm-stone massaging seats, perfume scents released into the cabin, entertainment and fridge in the rear, and two executive rear seating packages that include airline-like tables and a right-side footrest.

The Maybach models go off into Rolls-Royce territory, with the technology and features wrapped into a limo-like body that’s eight inches longer. The S 560 Maybach 4MATIC is $168,600, while the S 650 Maybach V12 with rear-wheel drive is $198,700.

Walkaround

Few of those 6500 changes are to the exterior. There’s a new grille and bumpers, and new LED headlamps that project a wide display and provide autonomous functioning. The AMG models have a low wing-like front fascia with big air intakes, and a rear diffuser with four exhaust tips.

Interior

The cabin reeks of splendor. It boasts beautiful craftsmanship that’s impressive to the eye, with fit and finish that few cars can equal.

For 2018, the two 12.3-inch screens, one for gauges and one for infotainment, are combined into one big screen, with higher resolution. A new system called Energizing Comfort can be set for five separate 10-minute programs to soothe the driver. The programs combine climate control, seat heating or cooling, seat massage, music, ambient lighting, and fragrance diffusion. Sounds perfect for a relaxing nap behind the wheel, while autonomous driving takes you to your destination.

The horizontal dash has two tiers and is glamorous in quilted leather with silver trim. The materials have high contrast, and there are a lot of shiny accents over the basic wood or leather trim, with carbon-fiber accents on the AMG models.

The front seats are superb, somewhere between supportive and plush, with big cushions and a lot of adjustment, although the ergonomics are occasionally fiddly. The rear seats are also wide and comfortable, at least the outside seats.

The COMAND connectivity system is upgraded for 2018. It comes with five years of service and includes Facebook, Pandora, voice-to-text email and text messages, a mobile app, non-streaming apps, web services, roadside connection, and diagnostics data.

Driving Impressions

The S-Class sedan ride is impeccable, while the brakes get the heavy car stopped true and without drama. It’s not athletic. It is too big and heavy to handle like a sports sedan. The steering lacks feedback.

Air suspension with adaptive dampers is standard, while the available Magic Ride Control uses hydraulic springs. Its glassy ride comes via a camera that views the road ahead and sets the suspension for the upcoming surface. In Comfort mode, it truly feels magic.

The new S 560’s twin-turbo V8 is 4.0 liters, smaller than the previous S 550 with 4.7 liters, but it makes 14 more horsepower. Its 463 hp is as much as anyone needs.

The AMG S 65 with a V12 making 621 horsepower is rear-wheel drive. Don’t let the horsepower fool you; it’s not as quick as the AMG S 63 V8. The V12 has other virtues. And it’s mated to a seven-speed automatic, not a nine-speed. The Maybach S 650 V12 makes less horsepower.

Summary

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is truly the ultimate sedan. Powerful, luxurious, taut ride and handling, built like a tank. The S 560 with the 463-hp V8 seems the appropriate model to us.

About These Prices

As you know, pricing cars is particularly complicated. One of our duties at CarQuotes.com is to help our customers comprehend this process better.

Three important prices we may show on a particular vehicle

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Price is for research purposes only. It reflects a typical, negotiated price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, license and registration, and where applicable, finance charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. The Estimated Target Price is NOT a price quote from CarQuotes.com or any other dealer. If you request a price quote from a dealer via CarQuotes.com displaying an estimated target price, your price may differ.

Invoice is commonly known as the published amount that the dealer paid the manufacturer for the vehicle. This may or may not represent a close relation to the dealer’s actual cost, but can be beneficial as a benchmark. This figure is available on many other web sites however CarQuotes.com adds an estimate of local and regional fees from manufacturer to the dealers to this price, which makes it very close to the actual invoice amount for cars at your local dealer.

MSRP is the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. This is a proposed price only. For most vehicles, the CarQuotes.com price is below this amount. Some high demand cars may be priced over this amount.

Estimated Target Price

The CarQuotes.com Target Price is to be used as a general guide that reflects a typical, market price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. This price is based on our research and estimates of supply and demand in the marketplace. There are many factors that go into the final price of a particular vehicle including local supply and demand. Your final price may differ.

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Prices include

The ’base’ price of the vehicle
All options that you select
Base Destination Charges — this is a charge that is added to the base price for every vehicle
Any related Estimated Manufacture to Consumer Cash Rebates. Note: rebates are subject to change at any time. Please make sure to confirm any consumer Cash rebates with your dealer representative at the time of purchase.

CarQuotes.com Estimated price(s) do NOT include any of the following:

Local taxes, license fees and other local fees, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, and where applicable, finance charges — these fees are also excluded from Dealer Invoice and MSRP and would be excluded from most advertisements you might see.
Random ’special qualification’ rebates — i.e., for new college grads only; for customers trading in a specific type of car.  Ask your dealer Representative for more information on ’special qualification’ rebates.

CarQuotes Estimated Dealer Price

The Estimated CarQuotes Dealer Price is an estimate of the pricing presented to CarQuotes members from CarQuotes Authorized Dealers in your area, and is calculated by subtracting an estimated savings value from the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") as well as a value that relates to invoice for the "ideal vehicle" you configured. Dealer documentation, administrative or similar processing fees are not included in the price estimate. Any vehicle configured on the CarQuotes website is an "ideal vehicle" and may not exist at a CarQuotes Authorized Dealer or any other partner dealer. Each Dealer attempts to match a member’s vehicle preferences with the best possible selection from current, in-stock inventory.

Estimated Savings

The Estimated Savings represents the estimated amount of savings off of MSRP available to you from CarQuotes Dealers for a vehicle consistent with your configured preferences plus any customer incentives currently available.  This is also true when it comes to CarQuotes estimated target prices. Your actual savings will depend on several factors including market conditions, the style of vehicle you select, installed options, dealer coverage, and applicable manufacturer incentives. Each dealer sets its own pricing.

Advertised Rebates, Special Manufacturer Financing or Leasing Programs

In most cases, you must choose between these programs OR a customer rebate or a special manufacturer-to-dealer incentive that may or may not already be included in your CarQuotes.com Target Price. So, your final price may go up if you take advantage of special manufacturer financing. Credit Union members should contact their Credit Union loan department to determine what type of loan and financing options are right for you.

Please note that CarQuotes.com strives to include identified manufacturer incentives within the CarQuotes.com Target Price. CarQuotes.com does not administer these programs, which are subject to and often change without notice. Eligibility for these programs is subject to verification by a licensed auto dealer.

Ask your dealer representative for complete manufacturer program details for your area, and how participation in these programs will affect your price.

Base Vehicle

The base vehicle is the vehicle before any optional equipment or destination fees have been added. All of the standard features are included in the base vehicle.

Options

This is the total charge for all optional equipment included in the configuration of your virtual vehicle. The Options charge varies depending on whether it is calculated based on the Factory Invoice or MSRP. Options are not included in the base vehicle price and are not considered standard features.

Regional Fees

A Regional Fee is the fee a manufacturer charges a dealer to advertise and promote the vehicle in the dealer’s market. CarQuotes also includes estimated manufacturer preparation charges (manufacturer charges to the dealer to cover any work done on the car prior to delivering it to the dealership) and fuel charges (the charge for the fuel in the tank when the buyer purchases the vehicle) in this total. CarQuotes attempts to include regional ad fees in its Factory Invoice calculations; other sites at times do not.

Destination Fees

These are the amounts that manufacturers charge to deliver a vehicle from the factory to the dealership.

Customer Incentives

Customer incentives are also commonly known as customer cash or bonus incentives. These incentives are offered by manufacturers as a way of enticing buyers into purchasing a vehicle.

Note: Dealer Invoice amount might not be the amount that the dealer paid to the manufacturer

Dealer Invoice price may or may not bear close relation to a dealer’s actual cost for the vehicle. In some cases, a cost for a vehicle may be significantly less than the invoice price originally paid for the vehicle. Any difference between invoice price and the dealer’s final cost may be caused by many factors including factory refunds, rebates, allowances, or incentives which the manufacturer or distributor may provide to the dealer.
