Introduction

Totally redesigned for the 2016 model year, the Volvo XC90, helped redefine the Volvo brand, now that the Swedish automaker is Chinese-owned. Worries that innovation would be sucked out of the brand leaving an empty shell appear to have been unwarranted as Volvo is continuing to produce cutting-edge vehicles.

The 2017 Volvo XC90 gets some expanded safety options. Also, the 2017 XC90 T5 model is now offered with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. All other XC90 models come standard with all-wheel drive.

The brand’s biggest luxury SUV offers seating for seven, five, or four, depending on seating configuration.

Three distinct powertrains are available, all with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission.

In the base XC90 T5, the engine is turbocharged, making 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

A turbocharged and supercharged version, in the XC90 T6, develops 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet.

Volvo also offers a XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid, with the T6 engine getting additional boost from a 60-kilowatt (87-hp) electric motor mounted at the rear. With total output of 400 horsepower, the XC90 T8 can run on the gasoline engine, on electricity alone, or both.

All-wheel drive is standard on all XC90 models, except on the base T5, which offers front-wheel drive standard, all-wheel drive optional.

Five Drive Mode selections are available: Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, Individual, and Off-road. The T8 has a different set. Driver-adjustable power steering is standard. Stop/Start technology, that annoying feature that shuts off the engine at intersections, is standard.

Adopting a theme that might be called subdued sophistication, the XC90 focuses on comfort and efficiency, as well as tasteful style. Designed with a restrained hand, the XC90 subtly exudes quiet elegance outside, while the interior spells luxury. The interior is premium, if not true luxury. Safety is the top priority here and where much of the premium price is focused.

Volvo’s revived SUV has earned impressive crash-test ratings. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it five stars overall. Rated Good on each test done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the XC90 was named a Top Safety Pick.

In keeping with the brand’s long-standing reputation for safety, Volvo gives the XC90 the latest safety features and systems, active as well as passive, some optional. Automatic braking at intersections has been added to the standard City Safety package. Pedestrian and cyclist detection now functions day or night.

Park Assist Pilot now lets the XC90 park itself in either parallel or perpendicular spaces. A road sign information system displays the speed limit. Rear collision warning can flash taillights if a vehicle behind is approaching too rapidly. A Run Off Road system tries to protect passengers if the XC90 crosses the road’s edge.

Topping the lineup is an ultra-luxurious, four-passenger XC90 T8 Excellence with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, promising First Class accommodations.

Lineup

The 2017 Volvo XC90 offers three powertrains, T5, T6, T8, each in two or three trim levels. (Prices are MSRP and do not include destination charge.)

XC90 T5 Momentum ($45,750) has front-wheel drive, the 250-horsepower engine, five-passenger seating, panoramic moonroof, and navigation. All-wheel drive is optional ($2,000). T5 R-Design ($51,150) has a sportier look, due to distinctive exterior and interior trim, a unique grille, and dual tailpipes. Included are sport seats with contrasting inserts, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

XC90 T6 Momentum ($52,250) comes with the 316-horsepower engine, all-wheel drive, leather upholstery, seven-passenger (three-row) seating, and heated front seats. XC90 T6 R-Design ($56,250) is the sporty version of T6. XC90 T6 Inscription ($57,350) focuses on luxury amenities, including Nappa leather, walnut wood inlays, and a 12.3-inch display screen.

XC90 T8 R-Design ($67,800) is the sporty rendition of the plug-in hybrid. XC90 T8 Inscription ($68,900) gets the plug-in hybrid powertrain, all-wheel drive, and 19-inch wheels. XC90 T8 Excellence ($104,900) has four-passenger seating and a full load of premium amenities, including individual reclining rear seats with massaging, a folding table, full Nappa leather, open-pore wood, and a refrigerator.

Walkaround

The XC90 presents a fresh approach to Volvo’s long-standing traditions. Visually contemporary and timeless, the body is serenely elegant and wholly unpretentious, nearly the opposite of some flashier competitors. Classic SUV design is evident, but integrated with aerodynamic contours and crisp lines.

As a bonus, the XC90 doesn’t appear to be as large as other seven-passenger SUVs. Generous expanses of glass help to draw the eye away from the tall bedsides, which are inevitable in larger SUVs. The windshield is only moderately slanted. Front overhang is shorter than that of some notable rivals.

Interior

Spacious for up to seven occupants, the XC90 cabin veers away from the norm, as seen in Japanese or German brands. Few, if any, competitors have managed to merge judicious design with lush detail work, in so adept a manner.

Carefully stitched leather upholstery melds with textured metal and optional matte wood, conveying a hint of soothing Scandinavian furniture. Seats promise sublime comfort, with those in front adjusting in a variety of angles. Second-row seats can slide fore and aft.

Two adults can fit in the third row, though leg space might be limited.

Because each row is a tad taller than the one ahead, everyone gets a good view, helped by big side windows. The standard panoramic sunroof can provide an additional shower of light.

On the dashboard, the Sensus 9.0-inch touchscreen is quite intuitive, easy to use, and promptly responsive. Controls feel crisply confident, and graphics are readily legible.

Road noise and wind sounds are largely stifled, helping to convey a sense of calmness. Bigger wheels emit more noise than the standard 18-inchers. Not everything is ideal. Only one USB port is available, while sunvisors are oddly basic.

With all seats upright, cargo volume totals 15.8 cubic feet. Fold the third row flat, and space grows to 41.8 cubic feet; then to 85.7, if second-row seatbacks are down.

Driving Impressions

On the highway, the sizable XC90 handles, steers and stops much like a passenger car, clinging predictably to the pavement. Electric power steering provides helpful, natural feedback. Only if taking a corner quickly does body roll become noticeable. In addition to its ample dimensions, the XC90 has a 9.3-inch ground clearance.

Though small in displacement, engines respond with spirit; T6 and T8 powertrains are especially enjoyable. Such peppiness, combined with carlike control, helps make the XC90 feel nearly nimble for a vehicle of its size. From a standstill, the T8 is clearly quicker, especially in Power mode; but the T6 isn’t likely to disappoint. The T6’s supercharger helps the engine respond briskly at low rpm, until the turbocharger can deliver boost.

Noise can be an issue, but only on specific pavement surfaces, or when accelerating hard. T5 and T6 models include a Stop/Start function, shutting the engine off when stopped at intersections. When ready to resume, the engine starts quickly and smoothly.

EPA fuel-economy estimates are compelling. With all-wheel drive, the T5 is EPA-rated at 22/25 mpg City/Highway, or 23 mpg Combined. The T6 is EPA-rated at 20/25 mpg City/Highway, or 22 mpg Combined.

Volvo’s T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid can travel up to 13 miles on the battery alone, with a Combined rating of 25 mpg when operating as a hybrid. The EPA rates equivalent efficiency relatively low, at 54 MPGe.

Summary

A subtly understated body encloses a tastefully elegant, highly ergonomic, premium-level family utility vehicle with seating for up to seven. Assembly quality is solid, as expected from Volvo. Even base models are equipped well, and options are logically organized. Its infotainment system is among the most intuitive.

About These Prices

As you know, pricing cars is particularly complicated. One of our duties at CarQuotes.com is to help our customers comprehend this process better.

Three important prices we may show on a particular vehicle

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Price is for research purposes only. It reflects a typical, negotiated price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, license and registration, and where applicable, finance charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. The Estimated Target Price is NOT a price quote from CarQuotes.com or any other dealer. If you request a price quote from a dealer via CarQuotes.com displaying an estimated target price, your price may differ.

Invoice is commonly known as the published amount that the dealer paid the manufacturer for the vehicle. This may or may not represent a close relation to the dealer’s actual cost, but can be beneficial as a benchmark. This figure is available on many other web sites however CarQuotes.com adds an estimate of local and regional fees from manufacturer to the dealers to this price, which makes it very close to the actual invoice amount for cars at your local dealer.

MSRP is the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. This is a proposed price only. For most vehicles, the CarQuotes.com price is below this amount. Some high demand cars may be priced over this amount.

Estimated Target Price

The CarQuotes.com Target Price is to be used as a general guide that reflects a typical, market price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges) generally found for the vehicle that you selected. This price is based on our research and estimates of supply and demand in the marketplace. There are many factors that go into the final price of a particular vehicle including local supply and demand. Your final price may differ.

CarQuotes.com Estimated Target Prices include

The ’base’ price of the vehicle
All options that you select
Base Destination Charges — this is a charge that is added to the base price for every vehicle
Any related Estimated Manufacture to Consumer Cash Rebates. Note: rebates are subject to change at any time. Please make sure to confirm any consumer Cash rebates with your dealer representative at the time of purchase.

CarQuotes.com Estimated price(s) do NOT include any of the following:

Local taxes, license fees and other local fees, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, and where applicable, finance charges — these fees are also excluded from Dealer Invoice and MSRP and would be excluded from most advertisements you might see.
Random ’special qualification’ rebates — i.e., for new college grads only; for customers trading in a specific type of car.  Ask your dealer Representative for more information on ’special qualification’ rebates.

CarQuotes Estimated Dealer Price

The Estimated CarQuotes Dealer Price is an estimate of the pricing presented to CarQuotes members from CarQuotes Authorized Dealers in your area, and is calculated by subtracting an estimated savings value from the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") as well as a value that relates to invoice for the "ideal vehicle" you configured. Dealer documentation, administrative or similar processing fees are not included in the price estimate. Any vehicle configured on the CarQuotes website is an "ideal vehicle" and may not exist at a CarQuotes Authorized Dealer or any other partner dealer. Each Dealer attempts to match a member’s vehicle preferences with the best possible selection from current, in-stock inventory.

Estimated Savings

The Estimated Savings represents the estimated amount of savings off of MSRP available to you from CarQuotes Dealers for a vehicle consistent with your configured preferences plus any customer incentives currently available.  This is also true when it comes to CarQuotes estimated target prices. Your actual savings will depend on several factors including market conditions, the style of vehicle you select, installed options, dealer coverage, and applicable manufacturer incentives. Each dealer sets its own pricing.

Advertised Rebates, Special Manufacturer Financing or Leasing Programs

In most cases, you must choose between these programs OR a customer rebate or a special manufacturer-to-dealer incentive that may or may not already be included in your CarQuotes.com Target Price. So, your final price may go up if you take advantage of special manufacturer financing. Please note that CarQuotes.com strives to include identified manufacturer incentives within the CarQuotes.com Target Price. CarQuotes.com does not administer these programs, which are subject to and often change without notice. Eligibility for these programs is subject to verification by a licensed auto dealer.

Ask your dealer representative for complete manufacturer program details for your area, and how participation in these programs will affect your price.

Base Vehicle

The base vehicle is the vehicle before any optional equipment or destination fees have been added. All of the standard features are included in the base vehicle.

Options

This is the total charge for all optional equipment included in the configuration of your virtual vehicle. The Options charge varies depending on whether it is calculated based on the Factory Invoice or MSRP. Options are not included in the base vehicle price and are not considered standard features.

Regional Fees

A Regional Fee is the fee a manufacturer charges a dealer to advertise and promote the vehicle in the dealer’s market. CarQuotes also includes estimated manufacturer preparation charges (manufacturer charges to the dealer to cover any work done on the car prior to delivering it to the dealership) and fuel charges (the charge for the fuel in the tank when the buyer purchases the vehicle) in this total. CarQuotes attempts to include regional ad fees in its Factory Invoice calculations; other sites at times do not.

Destination Fees

These are the amounts that manufacturers charge to deliver a vehicle from the factory to the dealership.

Customer Incentives

Customer incentives are also commonly known as customer cash or bonus incentives. These incentives are offered by manufacturers as a way of enticing buyers into purchasing a vehicle.

Note: Dealer Invoice amount might not be the amount that the dealer paid to the manufacturer

Dealer Invoice price may or may not bear close relation to a dealer’s actual cost for the vehicle. In some cases, a cost for a vehicle may be significantly less than the invoice price originally paid for the vehicle. Any difference between invoice price and the dealer’s final cost may be caused by many factors including factory refunds, rebates, allowances, or incentives which the manufacturer or distributor may provide to the dealer.
